As I’m sure you are aware, it is Mother’s Day this Sunday, and even though it’s a holiday created by Hallmark, it’s a day, correctly, that we honor mothers. A day of appreciation for the art of motherhood, and it is an art as much as it’s a labor or a responsibility. Mothers Rock!
And as it happens, this year, that Chelsea’s plan was to take Sharon, a most extraordinary mother, on a short trip to parts unknown for this weekend. Just for fun and a little adventure, she planned to get her mom out of town for a few days. The problem, was that Sharon was scheduled to work in the Deli on Sunday, a full shift, and none of our staff members was able to fill in for her.
We were sitting in Three Penny Wednesday afternoon, with Sharon bemoaning her bum luck and expressing her disappointment, when it occurred to me that I might be able to help out. Literally, I haven’t worked in the Deli for over five years; the last time I worked making sandwiches was long before the invention of the Tom Robbins or the Red Hot Rooster. It occurred to me that I should volunteer to fill in for Sharon and work in the Deli. It was only for a day, but I didn’t think I even remembered how to wrap a sandwich, much less making New Yorker.
Sitting there with Sharon, who truly deserved the break, I was full of the uncomfortable fear of coming off looking like an ass, or worse, a bumbling idiot. The thought of working in the Deli scared the beJesus out of me. And then I thought, “Peter, be brave, take a chance on looking like a dummy. It won’t kill you.” So I volunteered for the job, working from 10 to 3 in the deli. I can’t say I’m looking forward to it but I’m doing it, which is all that matters, I think.
The fish arriving tomorrow is our standard favorites. Plenty of Sea Scallops, Shrimp and Halibut. Our meat case is filled with Ribeyes and lovely thick pork chops and Misty Knoll chicken. Everything you need to make a great Mothers Day Feast.
