Happy rainy Monday! It is starting to feel like fall and I for one am happy! I love fall. This is sort of perfect cook’s weather. The gardens are rolling in the food and the weather is warm enough during the early evening to grill if you like and the occasional rainy day makes cooking indoors attractive for the first time since June. I want to grill and braise and bake and grill some more.
Our son Alec is plotting a cider pressing/pig roasting (on the new spit) gathering and I’m doing a little research on that. Fun. (See Peter, we have used it twice, we’ve already covered the cost of a one time rental :-). I have also been hankering for a novel cooking project so I am going to work on making some cheeses. Chelsea got me a cheese making kit for Christmas. It basically includes instructions and rennet for about eight different cheeses so I’m going to pick four and go from there. I know for the cow’s milk cheese I am going to use the beautiful Sweet Rowan Farm lightly pasteurized cream topped milk we sell. I suspect cheese making is like anything else, you increase your odds of success tremendously when you start with fabulous ingredients.
So one of my favorite parts of owning a store is having someone come in and ask for something in a very doubting yet hopeful tone, for example “Do you by any chance have caper berries?” and being able to say yes.
In the last week I have said a pleased yes to: Caper berries, birthday candles, red Thai curry paste, coconut milk, oats, and corn meal, soy milk, frozen berries and pink Himalayan salt.
