Some great eating ideas

Hi Folks-

Okay weekend food recap. Check out Hel’s Kitchen on Barre Street in the old kismet/salt location. Peter and I had meant to try it for quite a while and finally did two weeks ago. Her menu changes every week, our first Friday night (which is a firmly no cook night in our house) we had Slovakian food. We had delightful cabbage rolls, and a couple of quick pickle sides which we also enjoyed for a very reasonable price. We went back this past Friday to sample her Indian food and loved it, spicy lamb stew, tikka masala, naan, the works. Chef and proprietor Helen Lebun specializes in creative international home cooking prepared for take out. Tuesday through Friday from 3:30 to 7:30 you can swing by and pick up dinner to bring home and heat up. Her menu changes weekly.

So that was Friday. Saturday was ribs and collard greens, so good, so easy. And Sunday morning I splurged and made blueberry cheese danishes. I am telling you puff pastry can make anyone a pastry chef. We sell an upscale puff pastry but I must admit I often go to the Pepperidge Farm recipe site for ideas, here’s the recipe I made blueberry cheese danish and yes, they looked just like the picture. So win there. For dinner I made a NY times recipe, chicken swarma which was pretty tasty. I tried to up my game a little by making homemade pita and it just didn’t come out like I wanted it to and certainly not a bit like the picture. I used our new flour from the Nitty Gritty Grain Company and it was fantastic flour, you could feel the difference. I will be working on my pita performance though.

Oh and the coffee to accompany my lovely pastries was from Carrier Roasting Co. out of Northfield, VT. They are primarily a coffee CSA but they sell a little wholesale and we are happy to have them at the store. Try it, you’ll love it and we will try to keep it in stock!
