An Island Vacation

Hi Folks-

So I was visited today by a fisherman who works for a company called New England Fishmongers. They fish off Gloucester. MA and would deliver to us on Thursdays, fish that they caught the day before, offering a level of fresh that is hard to beat when you live anywhere but the coast. Sharon and I are trying some haddock he gave me as a sample and I’ll keep you posted.

This weekend Sharon and I are going up to the Lake Champlain Islands with Sophia and her friend, Maria. We’re staying in the same cabins that Sharon and Chelsea stayed in last week for Chels’ birthday celebration. The cabins are in North Hero and are right on the lake. I’m surprised when I talk to people about the islands that there are a fair number of people in our area that have never even seen the Champlain Islands. They are beautiful and are an entirely different slice of Vermont than seen anywhere else. They are in a different climate zone, warmer, than the parts of Vermont we are more familiar with.

So Sophia and I today bought a game of “Corn Hole” and a game called “Truth Bombs,” at Woodbury Mountain Toys and many snacks at Shaws and the Uncommon Market and we’re pretty much ready to go. I believe Truth Bombs calls for players to confess deep and shocking truths about themselves and I have no idea why I agreed to buy it. Anyway, we’re going for the weekend and I don’t have to confess anything I don’t want to confess.

King Salmon is just too expensive for either one of our suppliers to offer it. I can’t get it anywhere so I guess we’re left with waiting for the price to come down. We are trying something new in Turbot filets. I’ve never cooked it before but I’ve had it in restaurants and it’s delicious. Swordfish is at a low price and we have fresh oysters, Pemaquids, coming in.

Fish arriving tomorrow:

  • Alaskan Cod, flash frozen at sea
  • Dayboat yellow tail sole
  • Alaskan King Salmon
  • Sustainable Shetland Salmon
  • Dayboat Haddock
