Hi Folks-

Best news of the day? There is sirloin chili at the store, we served it today and there should be plenty for the case tomorrow. Also before I get distracted Save Saturday November 5th for the holiday wine tasting, details to follow later.

I was trying to figure out how the leaves turn and upon a little investigation I realized it is no simple matter. After I read a good solid four pages the upshot is that if we continue with cold nights and bright sunny days we should get a fair amount of bright red and foliage in areas particularly subjected to drought this summer (not central Vermont actually) will have the best views near rivers and lakes.

We went to Burtt’s Orchard in Cabot this weekend, which was fun. Not only do they have Macs but also Honey Crisp and Gala which are two of my favorite. We got a bunch for a cider pressing we are going to. We also stopped by the Plainfield Coop, I hadn’t been in a long time. That coop actually started in my folks’ (and many others’) kitchens in Plainfield :-). Very charming little store.

The only bummer in my rare two days off was that my oven was broken, it was such a perfect baking weekend. At any rate before being willing to go get apples I needed to find a stove top apple crisp recipe and I did. (this is sort of a combo of a couple of them) super easy peasy. Three cups cut apples, 2 tbl butter, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1.5 tbl brown sugar, mix in skillet, cover and cook for about 7 minutes or until they are how you like them. Topping is 1/4 cup chopped walnuts, 1/4 cup oats, 1 tbl brown sugar mixed together in a bowl. Melt a tbl of butter in a non stick and toast/saute topping briefly. Put the topping on your apples and you have a real winner! (and in seven minutes, got to love that).
